I have shopped at Nordstrom for a long time, and so it was with interest that I read this week that the Nordstrom family is considering taking the company private in a buyout transaction.
Given all of the difficulties that retail is having right now, it's an intriguing proposition. Nordstrom is publicly traded and listed on the New York Stock Exchange with the ticker JWN. It has a roughly $7.5 billion market capitalization as of market close on 6/8 (market cap = shares outstanding x price per share).
There's an interesting article on the Chicago Tribune website "A Nordstrom buyout? Lessons of J. Crew and Neiman loom large" which discusses buyouts of other retailers such as J. Crew Group, Neiman Marcus Group, and Gymboree Corp., among others, and the struggles that many of these retailers are having. It's worth a read.
