Venture Capital Growing in Europe - SFGate Article

11/19/2012

There's a recent article that appears on SFGate "Venture Capital Growing in Europe" that discusses the recent growth of venture capital investing in Europe.  Some take-aways:
  • European venture fund raising is on the rise.
  • Valuations are rising for seed and late-stage investments in popular venture capital hubs such as Berlin.
  • While London, Berlin and Stockholm are centers for technology and venture capital, opportunities are being found in more remote places such as Kiev, Tallin and Istanbul, as well as Latvia, Poland and Lithuania.
  • Eastern European entrepreneurs have strong engineering backgrounds.
  • Venture investors in more remote countries face challenges, such as "unfamiliar local laws, stock exchanges with little experience in technology listings, varying accounting standards - plus different negotiating styles."

It's an interesting read.  Here's the link:  http://www.sfgate.com/technology/article/Venture-capital-growing-in-Europe-4048845.php

How a Vicious Circle of Self-interest Sank San Bernardino - Reuters Report

11/13/2012

If you are following the pension crisis in California, here's a link to a Reuters special report on the San Bernardino bankruptcy:  http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/11/13/us-bernardino-bankrupt-idUSBRE8AC0HP20121113

The article identifies a host of issues that doomed San Bernadino, including:
  • Dysfunctional city government
  • Financial mismanagement
  • Murky accounting disclosures
  • Housing market crash
  • Overly-generous compensation and retirement packages to fire and police employees
  • Overly-generous pension benefits
  • Investment bankers facilitating the use of pension-obligation bonds
  • Influence of unions on city council members and council votes on pay and benefits

The article says no single element caused the bankruptcy but all contributed.  It's an interesting read and a cautionary tale of conflicts of interest and fiscal mismanagement.
